Mountain News Corporation Names Patrick Crawford Director of Content
ORINDA, Calif. – Mountain News Corporation today announced the appointment of Patrick Crawford as director of content for the company’s global multi-media channels, including OnTheSnow.com, MountainGetaway.com, online and radio snow reports and mobile and iPad applications. Crawford will start in the newly created content position at Mountain News on April 29, 2011, based in the company’s Colorado office.
“The OnTheSnow global web platform specializes in reaching skiers and snowboarders as they plan their holiday, prepare for their trip and interact online with the snow sports lifestyle. Patrick’s decade of experience communicating to skiers and snowboarders, developing premium online content, and creating a passionate online community of skiers and snowboarders prepares him well for overseeing our global content initiatives,” said Chad Dyer, global managing director of Mountain News Corporation.
Crawford joins Mountain News Corporation from Storm Mountain Publishing in Niwot, Colo., where he helped found Freeskier magazine in 1998, and served most recently as editorial and online director for Freeskier and Snowboard magazines and Freeskier.com and Snowboardmag.com. There he was responsible for overseeing all aspects of the editorial process for the company’s media products. He led all web development and site enhancement to Freeskier.com and Snowboardmag.com, helping to grow the sites into the leading digital outlets for the respective industries and building snow sports’ largest social media audience. Crawford also managed the company’s custom publishing efforts, such as Whistler’s WB Magazine, K2 FreeSkisForLife, the Local Lange Girl Competition, user-generated content sites for Coors, SanDisk, Salomon and more.
Crawford holds a master’s in mass communications and a bachelor’s in English from the University of Colorado at Boulder. An avid skier, Crawford and his wife and two kids live in Longmont, Colo.

OnTheSnow Is World’s Most Visited Snow Sports Website
A just-released Nielsen/Net Rankings audit confirmed today that OnTheSnow.com remains the most visited snows sports website in the world. The report showed this site’s traffic grew by more than one million visitors (50 percent) since January 2010, reaching 3.4 million unique visitors in January 2011.
The UK’s version of the site, OnTheSnow.co.uk, also recorded a significant increase in visitors: traffic grew by almost 100,000 (28.8 percent) since January 2010, reaching 430,392 unique visitors in January 2011.
“We see many more people coming online every year as they plan their winter holidays to ski resorts all over world,” said Chad Dyer, global managing director for Mountain News Corporation, which publishes OnTheSnow. “The latest figures validate that OnTheSnow remains the best possible resource for skiers and snowboarders on the Web.”
OnTheSnow is published in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, and from this year, Russian too. Each site has locally based editors and reporters writing weekly news covering resort expansions, package deals, events, and breaking news. More than 3500 news articles are produced each winter season across all the sites.
OnTheSnow.co.uk’s popular Planning A Ski Holiday Guide, written by the site’s editorial staff, includes information to help skiers plan every aspect of their winter holiday, from which resort has the cheapest beer, best shopping or deepest powder to the fastest or greenest ways of getting there.
New offerings for 2010-11 included a Gear Guide app for iPhone and iPad and a new Snow Report app for the Google Chrome Web Store. The site also expanded its gear section to include expert reviews and redesigned its photo and video gallery, now featuring a real-time stream of user content from around the world drew more visitors.
Broadened partnerships with Google and Yahoo! also helped fuel growth by integrating OnTheSnow content in products like Yahoo! Local News and Google Instant Results.
OnTheSnow’s innovation will continue throughout 2011 as the site partners with industry experts to augment current editorial offerings. Testing of new equipment is underway in February and March for the 2011/12 Gear Guide. The site will continue to focus on weather news and information important to skiers, supplied by alpine meteorologists around the world.

OnTheSnow Tops In The World Again; Nielsen Audit Shows 40 Percent Leap In UK
Just released Nielsen//Net Rankings show OnTheSnow.co.uk reached 334,091 unique visitors in January 2010, a leap of 40 percent over last year. OnTheSnow.co.uk reaches skiers in the United Kingdon, and is part of the OnTheSnow Web platform that produces snow sports Web sites in 13 markets throughout the world.

Alicia Gough, a top freelance journalist based in Brighton, UK has been named Executive Editor of OnTheSnow’s European newsroom operation. The announcement was made this spring by Craig Altschul, Editor-in-Chief of all Mountain News Corp. editorial products.

Nielsen Audit Confirms UK, European Growth Of OnTheSnow Leaps 150 Percent In One Year
A fast-track growth cycle in the UK and Europe has led to OnTheSnow becoming the dominant most visited snow sports Web site in the world. The leap in unique European visitors from a Nielsen audit in January 2008 (240,000) to another Nielsen audit in Jan. 2009 (607,000), showed an increase of 153 percent. UK monthly visits to OnTheSnow.co.uk alone rose from 124,000 in 2008 to 298,000 in January 2009.
